  the writing down is just a proxy for performing it correctly, if he could do it mentally it's fine. if he does it multiple times mentally, or erases and redoes it, that's also fine, same as stepping back and rerunning a computer simulation of a human brain multiple times - there's no 'magic consciousness juice' in the computer stepping back and forth like this, so either you deny substrate independence, you smuggle in a global reference time so stepping is disallowed, or you say that the computation is what matters. intuitively to me, the computation is what matters
